Our volunteer program is an excellent opportunity to make a difference for both people & the planet.

 

Volunteering Overview

Currently BGET needs volunteers to participate in all project areas, as well as individuals looking to teach English and basic electricity classes, work on our website, write articles, write grant proposals, and generally engage in a wide range of capacity-building efforts.

Cost Free
Salary None, but there are several foundations that have sponored our volunteers in the past.
 Expenses
Approximately 5,000-15,000 Baht per month depending on lifestyle + travel.
Desired Skills Computer program skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiarity with web Content Management Systems (CMS) a plus; well grounded in engineering principles, finance & economics; hands-on experience with renewable energy and appropriate technology, experience in fundraising and report writing; experience with curriculum design.
Languages English; Thai & Karen a plus.

Example Projects

  • Working with villagers to improve the sustainability of village micro‐hydro projects.

  • Continuing BGET’s work in bringing biogas digesters to the Burma/Thai border area.

  • Addressing sustainability issues of roughly 15,000 solar home systems installed in remote villages by the government through village trainings, awareness campaigns about warranty, rights, and technical solutions repair/replace failing parts.

  • Expanding sustainable deployment of solar electric systems for remote medical clinics, schools, and other essential community services in ethnic minority areas inside Burma.

  • Follow up sustainability training on hybrid diesel/solar electric systems BGET built to power computer training centers in seven refugee camps.

  • Teaching and working with refugee camp Engineering Studies Program (ESP) students, and helping develop renewable energy technical skills and English language skills with staff from BGET and partner organizations.

Grant Writer BGET is currently seeking a volunteer with experience and desire to assist with grant writing. While one of BGET’s goals is to function independently financially, the success of many of our current projects are dependent on generous donations from local, national, and international sources. job description
Business Volunteer

 

BGET seeks methods to become more independent of outside funding sources while still providing the same level of commitment to humanitarian assistance through appropriate technology solutions. A creative minded individual is sought to assist in this transition. job description
Appropriate Technologist

 

BGET aims to provide the proper technological solutions for various situations encountered along the Thai/Burma border. A successful volunteer will be comfortable learning new skills from others as well as transferring knowledge. job description
Agroforestry Volunteer BGET is in the early stages of establishing a demonstration site for the various appropriate technologies that are suitable for life along the Thai/Burma border. One of the focus areas of this site will be renewable energy technologies currently utilized by BGET including solar electric, solar hot water, biogas, and solar cooking. Additional focus will be placed on sustainable building and agriculture. The agroforestry volunteer will work with BGET staff to establish a functioning food forest with emphasis on techniques applicable to migrant schools, refugee camps, and Thai/Karen villages. This volunteer may be asked to live part time or full time at the demonstration site. job description
